What is Project 50 - Why Most People’s Concept of Retirement is Wrong

If you believe the quick Google search I did prior to writing this article, the act of writing a goal down increases the chances of achieving it by 42%.

And if you believe1the science” (as every politician referred to it during covid), publicising your goal makes you 65% more likely to achieve it.

Given that I want to 2enjoy living until I’m 100, and *retire aged 50, you’ll understand why I want to do everything to stack the deck in my favour.

*When I say ‘retire’, what I actually mean is retire from being made to do things that I’d rather not do. Out of principle, if I do make it to 100, I  want to spend at least half of those 100 years only “working” on things I am truly passionate about

I use Dr Evil’s air quotations because the irony is as soon as something feels like work, I want to be financially independent enough to stop.

Project 50 will be dedicated to sharing content that can help you live a life you love, retire at 50 all without selling your soul before the age of 50 to get there.

By sharing my learnings, failures and journey towards project 50, I hope it will help others do the same.

Here’s some examples of what I will be sharing in future content:

  • how to say no gracefully to preserve precious time for the things you love most (whilst still maintaining effective work relationships and social connections)

  • negotiating within the work place to do more of the things that bring you joy (and hopefully outsource or delegate those things that drain you)

  • how to invest your money wisely ‘buy’ more time to enjoy life with

Between now and then, here’s some other personal development content I’ve created to help you enjoy a life you love:

1. My main issue with the term is it made me think of adverts that start with science proves. Science is a spectrum, and politicians aren’t the best people to be interpreting or communicating “the science.”

2. Ricky Gervais has a sketch where he debates whether positive health choices are worth it if you get 10 more years of falling over being catastrophically dangerous (at what age do you go from falling to ‘having’ a fall by the way?).

My Nana made it to 94, but her fragility and other health issues meant there was very little enjoyment in her later years. Like a successful marriage, I don’t just want to make it to 100, but I want to enjoy life to 100, not simply suffer through it.

If you were wondering, the ‘swan’ in @project50_swancottage is a nod to my Nan’s maiden name, the @project50 instagram handle was taken, and the cottage part is a reference to eventually renovating a property.
